Day 6: Earth's Layers
Focus question: What causes convection currents? What causes convection currents in Earth's mantle?
Materials needed: file folder cut in half (do not cut along fold; cut the other direction), cardstock, Earth's interior handout, Earth's exterior handout, scissors, ruler, gluestick, pencil and colored pencils or markers, strip of cardstock or corrugated paper for binding
Teacher suggestions: Before photocopying the Earth's exterior, write on it "Glue on cardstock. Color. Don't cut out." You could also draw the "Lift" tab on before photocopying. In that case, you would write "Glue on cardstock. Color. Cut out." The glueing and coloring can be done at home. If they have the "Lift" tab written on the handout, then they can cut at home too. If "Lift" tabs are not written on ahead and they cut out the exterior without a tab, then one can be glued on later. After they finish the Earth's interior, then have them glue the pages together. Look to the home page for the order. When the book is bound, students will need a strip of corrugated paper or cardstock that is about 2.5-3 inches wide to cover the wholes on the binding from where generational cuts were made. Note: There are directions on creating a Sea Floor Spreading pop-up that are available under the Teacher Suggestions page.
Time needed for construction: 1 period
Homework:
Describe the different layers of the Earth's interiors. Include an explanation of the convection currents and how that drives the movement of tectonic plates. Please type of your paragraphs and save it as you may need to reformat it. NOTE: Be sure all layers are labeled and that you've also drawn in convection currents.
