Days 2 - 3: Nazca Plate Subduction
Focus question: How do plate movements affect Earth's continents and oceans?
Materials needed: file folder cut in half (not down the fold), photocopy of Nazca Plate, thick cardstock, scissors, gluestick, ruler, pencil
Time needed for construction: About 1.5 periods.
Teacher suggestion: Have students paste the Nazca plate onto thick cardstock for homework and color it the night before doing construction. It cannot be easily colored once the pop-up is created. Students should keep all materials in a manilla envelope or 1-gallon Ziplock bag. These can be reused year after year.
Homework:
Research subduction. Write 2 paragraphs about what is subduction, what causes subduction and what specifically is happening at the junction of the Nazca and South American Plates. Explain how your paper engineering demonstrates the science. Type of your paragraphs. Please make sure you save the files as you may have to reformat and reprint to fit the space on the page.
Resources:
Animation of subduction with some points (explanation is at a higher reading level so look at the other links for a written explanation)
