Teacher Suggestions
This is a fairly complicated project, but very worthwhile. On each day there are suggestions to make the lesson go smoothly. This project is amazing and it also requires a lot of materials management and requires keeping folks on the same step. It is recommended that you create the pop-up book yourself ahead of time to familiarize yourself with the project and to be able to show a sample.
Suggestions:
1. Construct the project beforehand to be familiar with the construction.
2. Materials management: Having a bunch of students responsible for resource distribution and collection is essential.
3. If possible have a few extra things glued onto cardstock for kids that lose pieces, forget stuff or were absent to help keep everyone engaged and on the same page.
4. Require or provide 1-gallon Ziplocks or manilla folders to keep materials organized. Manilla folders can be 3-hole punched to make it easier to keep in a binder.
5. In class, watch a short part of the video and then have students construct. As they are constructing, replay the video and walk around.
6. Get help. We did this project with a visiting artist. The first time we had her support for 6 periods. The second time she came for 4 periods and we taught two. Now, with the videos, we can run the project ourselves. It is however great to have parent volunteers come in and help.
We did this project over the course of two weeks which allowed for time to assign preparatory homework, such as coloring, glueing and cutting, so when we came to class we were able to focus on construction.
Lesson Plans:
These are notes from the artist from the first time we did this project. They correspond approximately with the different tabs.
